GUILFORD, Maine — A local man was arrested on Thursday after allegedly breaking into a garage and stealing a chainsaw and sander.

Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Guy Dow said he saw a man walking along Route 150 in Guilford on Wednesday evening and thought it was strange.

“I thought there was no reason for him to be walking in that area at that time of day,” Dow said on Thursday.

On a hunch, Dow checked up on a nearby farmhouse where the owners live out of state.

“I saw tracks in the snow behind where they plowed the driveway. Someone had broken into the back window,” said Dow, who noticed a chainsaw was missing.

He saw a chainsaw at the end of a neighbor’s driveway, he said. After interviewing the neighbor, Dow was told they gave the man he saw walking up the road a ride. The man had the chainsaw and another item with him, they told Dow.

Dow said he couldn’t locate the man again that night, but caught up chain saw with him walking along the road in Abbot on Thursday afternoon.

After a brief interview, Christopher Storer, 31, of Guilford, admitted to stealing the chainsaw and a sander, said Dow.

“He confessed to the whole thing,” said Dow.

He was arrested and taken to Piscataquis County Jail in Dover-Foxcroft, where he was charged with burglary and theft, both Class C felonies, Dow said.

Dow said he was familiar with Storer.

“He has some history of theft,” he said.
